Verb Tense Grid

Based on your level you should know:

                                                                                Learn in                Master by

    Simple Present                                                    A1                             A2B1

    Present Continuous & Simple Past            A1 & A2                    A2B1

    Past Continuous                                               A2B1                            B1

    Present Perfect                                             A2B1 & B1                       B2

    Present Perfect Continuous                           B1B2                           B2

    Past Perfect                                                          B1                               B2

    Past Perfect Continuous                                   B2                            B2C1

Those are the usual ones we see. The futures tend to be understandable as we move down the grid. We also see the difference between the different types of futures ("be going to" and other tenses for futures) that we start to learn at level A2-A2B1 and should be more or less mastered by B1B2.

I made this recap for those who might find it useful:

It's a summary of what I put on the whiteboard when I teach these tenses. I will later add the others.

*BGiU = Basic English in Use (or as you know, it's the same as Essential English in Use) Please use it to practice your conjugation. Remember to say things out loud as you answer your exercises as well, it helps!
